Module 8

Module Details: Building AI Agents with ADK: Empowering with Tools

What it is:

This session builds on your foundational understanding of AI agents by introducing tool-empowered AI systems using the Agent Development Kit (ADK). You’ll learn how to equip your agents with specialized tools - APIs, external connectors, and logic functions - that expand their abilities beyond text-based reasoning. The session focuses on how to integrate tools into the agent’s decision loop, manage tool selection dynamically, and execute actions based on user intent. By the end, you’ll understand how to create multi-capable AI agents that can fetch data, send messages, make transactions, or interact with third-party platforms in real time.

Why it matters:

AI agents become truly powerful when they can act, not just respond. Tool-enabled agents bridge the gap between intelligent conversation and meaningful execution - whether it’s retrieving information, triggering a workflow, or making a secure API call. Learning how to empower agents with tools through ADK gives developers the ability to automate complex operations and link AI reasoning directly to digital infrastructure. This is the foundation of modern “agentic ecosystems,” where AI systems collaborate with real-world tools to solve problems, assist users, and perform end-to-end tasks autonomously.

What you’ll build:

You’ll build an AI agent capable of using multiple tools to execute user requests. The agent will identify which tool to use, such as a web API, Africa’s Talking service, or database query, based on the user’s intent. Using ADK, you’ll implement tool registration, selection, and execution flows, enabling the agent to carry out actions like sending notifications, summarizing data, or retrieving live updates. You’ll also experiment with adding fallback logic, tool orchestration, and memory integration, ensuring your agent remains context-aware and efficient.

Takeaways:

  • How to integrate external tools and APIs into AI agents using ADK

  • How to design tool-calling logic for adaptive decision-making

  • How to connect agents to real-world systems (e.g., APIs, databases, or communication services)

  • Best practices for building secure, scalable, and multi-tool agents that can think and act autonomously
