Overview
Africa’s Talking, in collaboration with Google, presents LaunchPad: Generative AI + APIs for Innovation - a groundbreaking developer program designed to upskill and inspire developers across Sub-Saharan Africa.
This immersive learning journey blends Google Cloud’s Generative AI expertise with the power of Africa’s Talking APIs, guiding participants through 10 comprehensive modules, assignments, and a capstone project. The program moves from foundational cloud and AI concepts into advanced frameworks, API integrations, and offline-ready solutions—helping developers build impactful, production-ready applications for real-world challenges.
By the end, participants will have worked on hands-on assignments, collaborated with peers, and built a portfolio-ready project that showcases their ability to combine Generative AI with APIs for innovation across industries. Find all modules and resources attached below.
Get ready for a program full of up-skilling and knowledge!

Module Details: Building AI Agents with ADK: The Foundation
What it is:
This session introduces developers to AI Agent Development using the Agent Development Kit (ADK) - a foundational toolkit for designing intelligent, goal-driven AI systems. You’ll learn how to use ADK to create agents that can reason, plan, and act based on real-world tasks and contexts. The session will guide you through defining agent goals, structuring workflows, and connecting AI logic with APIs and external data sources. By the end, you’ll understand the core components of the ADK, including intent recognition, memory, decision chains, and the communication protocols that make agents autonomous and adaptive.
Why it matters:
As applications evolve, AI agents are becoming the next major shift in software intelligence - moving beyond static applications to dynamic, autonomous systems capable of executing complex tasks. Understanding how to build with ADK gives developers the foundation to design AI-driven assistants, productivity tools, and enterprise automations that learn, adapt, and interact naturally with users and data. These concepts form the backbone of modern “agentic systems,” where Generative AI is not just producing outputs, but orchestrating actions and reasoning at scale. Learning ADK equips you to build applications that think, decide, and respond intelligently across multiple domains.
What you’ll build:
You’ll create a basic AI agent using the Agent Development Kit that can understand user intents, execute defined tasks, and manage responses through logical workflows. The agent will combine structured prompts, modular decision-making, and action triggers to simulate autonomous reasoning. You’ll also integrate external APIs (like Africa’s Talking or Google Cloud services) to give your agent real-world utility - whether it’s fetching data, responding to queries, or performing programmed tasks. By the end of the session, you’ll have built your first functioning AI agent, laying the groundwork for more complex multi-agent systems in future modules.
Takeaways:
Understanding the core architecture of AI agents and how the Agent Development Kit (ADK) simplifies their creation
How to design agent goals, decision logic, and memory flows
How to integrate APIs and tools to extend agent capabilities
Best practices for debugging, testing, and scaling agent-based systems
