About this event

Overview

Africa’s Talking, in collaboration with Google, presents LaunchPad: Generative AI + APIs for Innovation - a groundbreaking developer program designed to upskill and inspire developers across Sub-Saharan Africa.

This immersive learning journey blends Google Cloud’s Generative AI expertise with the power of Africa’s Talking APIs, guiding participants through 10 comprehensive modules, assignments, and a capstone project. The program moves from foundational cloud and AI concepts into advanced frameworks, API integrations, and offline-ready solutions—helping developers build impactful, production-ready applications for real-world challenges.

By the end, participants will have worked on hands-on assignments, collaborated with peers, and built a portfolio-ready project that showcases their ability to combine Generative AI with APIs for innovation across industries. Find all modules and resources attached below.

Get ready for a program full of up-skilling and knowledge!

Module 2

Module Details: Get started with the Gemini API using the Firebase AI Logic SDKs

What it is:

This article introduces developers to using Firebase’s AI Logic SDKs as a streamlined way to call Google’s Gemini API directly from their app logic. Instead of managing REST calls manually, you’ll leverage SDK methods that handle streaming text, tool or function calling, and safety configurations natively within Firebase. Whether you’re writing Cloud Functions or building a client-side integration, this guide shows how to connect securely and efficiently to Gemini while maintaining clean, maintainable code.

Why it matters:

The AI Logic SDKs simplify complex API workflows by providing strongly typed, developer-friendly methods to interact with Gemini models. Because they’re built into the Firebase ecosystem, you get native authentication, project configuration, and observability out of the box. This makes them ideal for developers moving beyond prototypes toward stable, production-ready applications. By using the SDKs, you can focus on crafting meaningful AI behaviors instead of debugging authentication flows or response parsing logic.

What you’ll build:

You’ll create a minimal but practical AI Skills module that encapsulates common model actions—such as summarizing text, extracting key entities, or generating concise study notes. Each skill will be defined as a callable function accessible from your web or mobile app. In your front end, you’ll display streaming responses from Gemini in real time, giving users the experience of an interactive, intelligent assistant embedded directly in your app.

Takeaways:

  • How to structure prompts and parse model outputs reliably

  • When to prefer AI Logic SDKs vs. raw REST calls

  • A clean separation between UI, AI skills, and data access you can grow into RAG or multi-step workflows
