by @Michael Kimathi I have spent more than a decade and half inside rooms where African developers demo brilliant software. USSD apps that put insurance on a $15 handset. SMS systems that warn a village before the flood arrives. Voice bots that speak to a farmer in her own language. And I have watched, over and over, the same ending: the demo wins the hackathon, the crowd claps, and three months later the code is dead in a repository nobody visits. That ending is not a talent problem. Africa is producing developers faster than any other region on Earth. The continent's developer base has been growing at roughly 21% a year, the highest rate of any region in the world (Boston Consulting Group, 2026). The ending is a distribution problem. We built a generation of builders and gave them nowhere to sell. The Africa's Talking Marketplace exists to fix that ending. The Gap Think about what a developer in Nairobi, Lagos, Jo’burg, Goma, Algiers, Rabat, Cairo Kisumu, Mombasa, Maputo, Kano, or Kigali needs to turn a working app into a business: hosting they can afford, a billing system that actually collects money, a way for customers to find them, and enough trust that a business in another country will pay for software built by someone they have never met. Each of those is a full-time problem. Global cloud platforms solve hosting but bill in dollars against local revenue. Payment collection across African markets is its own startup. Discovery is worse: there has been no shelf where an African business goes to find African-built software. So developers default to the only two paths available: freelance gigs, or a job abroad. Google's Africa Developer Ecosystem research found that 38% of African developers already work for at least one company based outside the continent ( Google, 2021 ). That is a win for individual incomes and a quiet loss for local software ownership. The Marketplace collapses those four problems into one platform. A developer packages their solution as a plugin, submits it once, and Africa's Talking handles hosting, deployment, listing, and billing. Any business on the continent can find that plugin, pick a pricing plan, click deploy, and get their own running instance. The developer watches subscriptions and revenue from a dashboard. That is the entire pitch: build once, sell everywhere, get paid. From Projects to Products The deeper shift here is psychological, and I say this as someone who has hosted thousands of community events with companies like BlackBerry, Nairuby (Africa Ruby Community), University of Nairobi, Google, MongoDB, Atlassian, Mozilla and many more: we have trained African developers to think in projects. A project is "my app." A product is "a plugin other businesses can pay to deploy." The Marketplace forces that upgrade. To be listed, a solution has to be containerized, configurable, priced, categorized, and reusable by strangers. Those are not hoops you ought to figure out how to navigate; they are the exact disciplines that separate hobby code from a software business. This is also why we have rewired our entire community strategy around it. Every hackathon in our calendar now ends with the same challenge: do not just win the prize, publish on the Marketplace. The hackathon becomes the top of a funnel that ends in recurring revenue, not a certificate. Community events stop being cost centers and become a product pipeline at scale. The Business Logic, For Everyone at the Table A marketplace only survives if every side profits. Here is how each side wins. For developers: revenue through a published revenue-share model on subscriptions, plus visibility and scale they could never buy alone. A plugin that solves rent reminders for one Nairobi landlord can be deployed by property managers in Kampala, Joburg, Maputo, Dakar, Algiers, Accra, and Dar es Salaam the same week, with zero additional infrastructure work by the builder. For businesses: ready-made solutions built on communication rails that already work in their market (SMS, USSD, Voice, and Airtime), deployable in minutes instead of procurement cycles measured in quarters. Billing runs through the AT wallet they already fund. For Africa's Talking: listing and hosting revenue, a share of subscription income, and something more valuable than either: retention. Every plugin deployed deepens API usage and makes the ecosystem stickier. The Marketplace turns a developer community from a marketing expense into a source of revenue that grows on its own. That loop is the return on investment. Developers earn, so they stay and build more. More plugins mean more choices for businesses, and less engineering overhead for the customer, so adoption grows. More adoption means more API traffic and more revenue shared back to developers. Each turn of the wheel funds the next. Why Now Africa's internet economy was projected to reach $180 billion by 2025 and $712 billion by 2050 ( Google and International Finance Corporation, 2020 ). The AfCFTA is stitching 54 markets into one, and the African Union's Digital Transformation Strategy commits the continent to a Digital Single Market by 2030 and to Africa becoming a producer, not only a consumer, in the global digital economy ( African Union, 2020 ). Capital is moving again too: 178 African startups raised $1.64 billion in 2025, up 46.2% on the year before ( Disrupt Africa, 2026 ). GitHub projects that Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, and Morocco will each add millions of developers in the coming years ( GitHub, 2025 ). The talent and the market are growing at the same time. Whoever builds the rails between them will capture the value. Other continents already ran this experiment. Salesforce's AppExchange, Shopify's app store, and Apple's App Store each turned a platform into an economy by letting outside builders sell to the platform's customers. Africa deserves that same machinery, built for African realities: prepaid billing instead of credit cards, USSD instead of app-store-only distribution, and plugins that assume a 2G user, not a fiber connection. What I Want You To Do With This If you are a developer: stop building portfolios and start building plugins. Take the thing you demoed last year, containerize it, price it, and submit it at marketplace.africastalking.dev . If you run a business: before you commission custom software, check the shelf. Someone on this continent has probably already built it, for your channels, your customers, and your price point. If you are an investor or ecosystem builder: pay attention to this model. The next great African software companies will not all look like startups. Some will look like a single developer with three plugins and a thousand subscribers, earning in twelve markets at once thanks to “AI productivity boost” and unmatched Africa engineering talent. We spent decades teaching Africa to engineer solutions at scale. The next decade is about teaching Africa to own what it codes. That is what the Marketplace is for.
